Beach House: Talking Head Club

Hey guys,

It’s past my bedtime (and by that I mean I’m gonna be pooped when I have to get up in eight or nine hours for my 11 a.m. class), so this is going to be quick.

Tonight, I decided to take Sam Sessa’s advice and check out Beach House. They were playing at the Talking Head Club (which now resides at Sonar). I wanted to do some interviews, but slowly I chickened out to the point of almost not even attending the show. Instead, I went and made it a point to absorb as much of the culture as I could.

The music was chill, and the club was full. I think it was a bigger crowd than the normal scene was used to, but it was fine. No one got hurt or angry and if I may say so, a good time was had by all.

Music started at 9, and I arrived just in time to see the first act go on. Following was the Sian Alice Group from London. They were fun to watch and kept switching places with one another and taking over instruments. They did this hypnotic beat thing a couple of times. It sucked me in and I was a bit concerned. Following them was Vetiver, a touring act from San Francisco, who had a twinge of country western to them. What did I refer to them as? New-age western. Sounds about right to me.

Conversation sometimes competed with the music, but the bands knew what they were doing. The concert-goers made me feel like I was in English class, or back at Fordham. I guess that’s why my roommate heard that Baltimore (Hampden) was the new Brooklyn. Anyway, I felt like an outisder in a sea of pixie cuts, headscarves and dark-rimmed glasses, but we all came together for Beach House.

Beach House concluded the night with their dreamy lullaby rock. Come to think of it, everyone I heard tonight would be great bedtime music. But I lost myself dancing, and came back to find that many others were in the same place as me – closed eyes and bodies reacting as they feel they should.

It was a good night. I have EAR PWR and Adventure tomorrow and The Death Set on Friday. I will make conversation there.
